Criminal Background Checks

Criminal background checks are not nearly as effective as The Diana Screen® when it comes to protecting children and teens from the risk of sexual abuse by adults.

Criminal background checks can only identify people with criminal convictions for child sexual abuse. However, most acts of child sexual abuse are never reported to the authorities, let alone result in a criminal conviction that could later be detected by a criminal background check.

In a survey of 13,000 people about the child sexual abuse within their families by The Child Molestation Research & Prevention Institute, only 6% indicated that the abuse was reported to the police.1

In a study of 3,700,000 criminal background checks reported by ChoicePoint, only 0.1% of the entire screened pool was identified as having a criminal history related to sexual offenses.2   While most organizations rely on criminal background checks as their strongest safety measure toward keeping children safe, the reality is that criminal background checks provide very little protection from child sexual abuse.

While criminal background checks only identify men and women with criminal histories of sexual offenses one-tenth of one percent of the time, The Diana Screen® identifies an estimated 70% of the men and women who should not be placed into positions of trust with children because they present a sexual risk: either because they have already sexually abused a child or they have a very weak understanding of the strict sexual boundaries required between adults and children.

HOW THE CHILD ABUSER PASSES YOUR SCREENING
1. He assumes, since you know him, that you won't do a thorough reference check.
2. You may need to hire someone quickly, so you do not do a thorough reference check.
3. You ask for two letters of reference. He gives you references who know nothing about his past as an abuser.
4. On his resume, he leaves out the places he worked that would report his problematic behavior.
5. He strongly encourages you to do a criminal check on him. Like over 95% of people who sexually abuse, he knows he has never been convicted.
6. You don't use the new screening methods - such as THE DIANA SCREEN®.
